1. The Logic of Incarnation: James K. A. Smith's Critique of Postmodern Religion

Growing out of a conference in St. Catharine's ON last year, comes a book titled "The Logic of Incarnation: James K. A. Smith's Critique of Postmodern Religion" by ICS alumnus Neil DeRoo and Brian Lightbody. The book looks at various facets of ICS Alumnus James K.A. Smith's engagement with postmodernism and religion.

Contributing authors to the book are James H. Olthuis (Emeritus Professor, ICS), Mark Bowald (Professor of Theology, Redeemer University College), Jamie Vanderberg (CRC Campus Minister, Guelph), Andre Basson (CRC Campus Minister, Brock), and Peter Schuurman (CRC Educational Mission Specialist).

2. Ethical Turns: Adorno Defended against His Devotees

ICS Senior Member Lambert Zuidervaart presented a keynote lecture in Montreal on the occasion of receiving the Symposium Book Award at the recent conference of the Canadian Society for Continental Philosophy. The award is given each year for the best book on continental philosophy in a Canadian context. Lambert's lecture, titled "Ethical Turns: Adorno Defended against His Devotees," summarized themes in his award-winning book Social Philosophy after Adorno (Cambridge University Press, 2007).

3. Undoing What Has Been Done: Arendt and Levinas on Forgiveness

PhD Junior Member Chris Allers has recently had a paper accepted for presentation at Inter-disciplinary Net's 2nd Global Conference, "Forgiveness: Probing the Boundaries" in Salzburg, Austria on March 13th-16th, 2009. Chris' paper is entitled "Undoing What Has Been Done: Arendt and Levinas on Forgiveness" and focuses on what it would mean to forgive a misdeed.

4. Thinking Deeply About Our Faith

The November issue of the Banner, the Christian Reformed Church's magazine, includes an article by Cal Seerveld titled, "Thinking Deeply About our Faith". In the article, Cal writes "I thank God that a New Yorker like me was adopted by the God fearing, Dutch Canadian mavericks who began what has become the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto. Just as parents in the United States formed Christian school societies to start Christian elementary schools, certain Canadian immigrants from Holland in the 1950s formed an Association for Reformed Scientific studies to set up a Christian university." (The Banner, v.143, #11, 2008)

5. Sharing the Mission of ICS

Share ICS via PowerPoint: A short presentation of ICS's Mission is now available at http://www.icscanada.edu/presentation/. These slides are an ideal complement to ICS offerings in churches. Be sure to let your church know the presentation is available.
