Position Description
The Institute for Christian Studies (ICS) Librarian manages all library and archival resources collected by ICS, including monographs, serials, archival records, and a digital institutional repository on a DSpace platform. The Librarian is responsible for answering reference requests and general inquiries, ensuring the availability of digital and analogue course readings, and leading occasional educational sessions for the ICS community. The ICS Librarian reports to the Academic Dean and works collaboratively with faculty and staff.
About the Organization
ICS is an independent Christian graduate school with a charter to grant MA and PhD degrees in philosophy (including an Educational Leadership stream within the MA program), as well as an MWS-ART (Master of Worldview Studies in Art, Religion, and Theology). At ICS, the expertise of our experienced and widely-published faculty combines with the intimacy of a small school to create a hospitable academic community that welcomes the whole person. Located in the Knox College building at the heart of the historic University of Toronto campus, ICS has a unique library collection that has been integrated into the University of Toronto Library (UTL) system.
Responsibilities
Use ICS’s Integrated Library System, particularly for cataloguing and circulation purposes
Manage print course reserves, as well as making course reserves available for remote learning (including managing copyright clearance for these materials)
Provide general in-depth research assistance for students and faculty
Collaborate with ICS faculty and academic support services
Chair the Library & Scholarship Committee and participate in several internal ICS committees
Liaise as appropriate with other librarians in the UTL system, including service on standing committees
Manage different library policies and enable partnerships between multiple library systems
Travel to Hamilton, ON to access the offsite ICS collection as needed
Supervise student research assistants for library projects as needed
Liaise with donors and institutional partners as needed
Other duties as assigned
Key Qualifications
ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science, or equivalent
Successful experience in academic librarianship
Excellent oral and written and interpersonal communication skills
Knowledge of Canadian copyright law, especially as it pertains to academic publishing (with emphasis on academic theses and dissertations)
Knowledge of institutional repositories/digital collections
Knowledge of MARC cataloguing and metadata standards and applications
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with DSpace
Familiarity with Alma ILS
Knowledge of archival preservation
Position Status
This position is part-time (.6 FTE), 3 days per week. While some of the work involved can be done remotely, the presence of the Librarian in the ICS Library is required at least one day per week, on a schedule to be approved by the Academic Dean.
